You may not think you can learn any valuable lessons about business from a movie like ‘Spring Breakers’, but surprisingly; there are five things this movie can teach you about business. A movie about four college coeds, clad in skimpy bikinis, who get themselves in a dangerous predicament, can teach us some key aspects about starting and growing a thriving business.
The movie ‘Spring Breakers’ is about four young ladies, who dream of fun and freedom in sunny Florida after being the only ones left in their dorms over spring break. They have a problem though, how to fund their trip. People that want to start a new business can relate to the same problem the girls in ‘Spring Breakers’ faced. Where do you come up with the money to fund such as huge endeavor? Well, you don’t want to use the same funding source the girls used in the movie. Three of them decided to rob a diner to fund their trip. The first lesson a prospective business owner can learn from the girls in ‘Spring Breakers’ is to identify a solid funding source. Ensure your funding source is legal, of course, and develop a plan to get the funds you need to start your new business.
The girls were very creative in coming up with a plan to fund their spring break trip. You can be just as creative when trying to come up with the funds to start a new business. Perhaps you can borrow money from friends or relatives, borrow from your 401K, create a savings plans for yourself, borrow from your zero interest credit cards, or take out a bank or credit union loan. The point is just like the girls had a dream and figured out how to make their dream a reality; you too, need to have the same level of dedication, creativity, and vision to make your dreams of owning your business a reality.
Managing obstacles in business.
The girls in the movie get into some trouble and are arrested while on spring break. They get bailed out by a local thug named Alien, but they girls find themselves wrapped up in a very dangerous world of money and other dangers. Don’t want to give too much away, if you still haven’t seen ‘Spring Breakers’, but the girls are far from the innocence of their college lives in the dorm. Business owners can relate to what the girls went through. Sometimes as a business owner, there are obstacles that you face that have the potential of having a negative impact on your business. These obstacles can derail your business’ growth. This brings us to the second lesson that can be learned from ‘Spring Breakers’, be sure if you are getting into business with a partner that your goals and vision for the company are aligned.
The girls partnered with Alien, thinking this is the answer to all of their money and boredom problems, however, they didn’t really know their new business partner. If you are starting a business with someone, you need to take the time to discuss where you want the company to go, how you will grow your company and what your long term growth strategies will be to sustain the company. If you and your partner aren’t on the same page, this can prove fatal for the success of your business.
In the movie, one of the girls, decides to go back home soon after arriving. She doesn’t want to get caught up in a dangerous situation, so she leaves her friends and heads back to school. After Alien as a run in with a local drug dealer, another girl decides she has had enough danger and excitement and bails on her friends. This brings us to the third and fourth business lessons you can learn from ‘Spring Breakers’, always have an entrepreneurial spirit and teamwork is the key to success.
Gaining from Teamwork.
The girls didn’t go to their parents for money or help; they were true entrepreneurs. They worked together as a team to accomplish their goals in the beginning and were successful. When two of the girls left the group, this is when things start to unravel. This is especially true for successful businesses. If you have a solid team, which you set realistic goals for then you are bound to have a more profitable business. This leads us into the fifth business lesson learned from ‘Spring Breakers’, set clear and realistic goals for your team. The goals that you set should support the long term goals of your business. Constant communication among your team is also very important to help grow a successful business. Have regular meetings to share ideas and brainstorm. This can help you come up with creative ways to continue to grow your business or new markets to enter is very important.
‘Spring Breakers’ was an interesting and thought provoking movie that will appeal to young entrepreneurs. There are so many life and business lessons that are takeaways from the movie. These lessons can help existing or new business owners, build and grow a successful, profitable and thriving business that will stand the test of time.
