The Universe pageant doesn’t’ attract a lot of attention, but this year an event took place that reignited its popularity. Host and comedian Steve Harvey, when announcing the winner, called the wrong name and accidentally crowned Miss. Colombia rather than Miss. Philippines.
It did not take long for Harvey’s blunder to take the Internet by storm, as people tweeted and posted all types of jokes and articles detailing the blunder. But, he took it all in stride, with a lot of patience, knowing that eventually the storm would pass and the Internet would, mostly, put the incident behind them. Cell phone company T-Mobile jumped on the opportunity and took advantage of the situation calling on Harvey to star in an amusing Super Bowl ad that poked fun at what he had done. In the ad, which is set up like a new Verizon commercial, Harvey comes out to admit that Verizon “had it wrong” and T-Mobile was the true winner, but it was not his fault this time around.
The commercial immediately started to gain popularity as people shared and spoke about it throughout their social media channels. Harvey loved the concept and found it a great way to take a bad moment and make light of it since all you can really do at a time like that is wait for it to blow over.
What makes the incident, and everything that followed so surprising is that it did not truly hurt Harvey as much as it may have someone else. In fact, it only served to make him more popular as people began searching him more and more to find out about the blunder and what came of it. It shows even further the appreciation that people have for a situation on TV that hasn’t been scripted and prepackaged. Steve Harvey has been able to use it to his advantage by working with T-Mobile and many other organizations, adding a fresh realism and humanity to a landscape thats become overly mechanical.
In some ways, the incident has made him more popular than the Pope. While Harvey has always been a very popular celebrity, this one incident has skyrocketed him back into the homes of many Americans and even international citizens, as he is sought after to help promote brands and topics. No doubt, T-Mobile is just the first company to take advantage of the situation, but even when the storm has past, people will want Harvey for their product promotion and the celebrity he brings.
